WEEK 1: Art is a Weapon
As Teaching Artists are introduced to a virtual learning platform, Lissa Corona joins the class on the first day of instruction with important motivational reminders. Rizzhel provides technical lessons on organizing emails and basic editing techniques, and the class creates their first video on iMovie.
WEEK 2: We Need You Here
Rizzhel starts the class off with a challenging question. Teaching Artists show the first cuts of their creations and share what they hope to learn from the class.
WEEK 3: We Can Make Our Own
Photographer Alanna Airitam joins the class to discuss the urgency of creating your own spaces, the power of emotions, and the importance of being authentic. Meanwhile, students start experimenting with camera equipment and pre-production.
WEEK 4: Creating an Image That Doesn’t Exist
Guest artist Mariel Miranda asks the class to draw from their experience and describe an image that doesn’t exist. Students share b-roll collected for their videos.
WEEK 5: Reflections
The class reflects on the skills they’ve learned and celebrate their collective growth in the program so far.
WEEK 6: Creating Tools, Making Space
Lorain, Alejandro, Endiya, Anna, and Jeff give sneak peeks into their video projects and how they make space for their students’ experiences. Rasha asks the class to reflect on what home means to them.
WEEK 7: Teaching Truth
Rizzhel starts the class off by unpacking common stereotypes about teaching and communities of color in film and media. Students share clips from their own teaching practices.
WEEK 8: Cada Cabeza Es Un Mundo
In the final week of instruction, mentor and artist Don Gregorio Antón reminds the class of the power of teaching and all the joy and responsibilities that come with it. Teaching artists reflect on their progress throughout the program and ground themselves in what they miss most from before the pandemic.
